Removing spent plant material and general debris from beds reduces hiding spots for pests and disease heading into winter, and gives beds a clean start in spring.

4. Clean Up Walkways, Entrances, and Drainage Areas

Debris sitting near entrances, downspouts, or drainage paths can cause problems once freeze-thaw cycles start. A clear property is also a safer one — less material to trip on or track inside once weather turns.

5. Think Ahead to Snow Season

Fall cleanup is also a natural point to line up winter service. If snow and ice management wasn't part of your plan last year, this is the easiest time to get it scheduled before the first snowfall — not after.

Timing It Right

The ideal fall cleanup window is after most leaves have dropped but before the ground freezes solid — for most Edmonton properties, that generally lands somewhere in October. Waiting too long into November often means working around early snow instead of ahead of it.
